explained as a contraction: Rhuddlan in Bye-gones Jan 1882, p.3, and ~ Nov 1898, p.532

Lloyd in HPowysF IV, p.227, says that Gwgan was father of St Cedwyn (see Llangedwyn) but this is unsubstantiated.

(rivulum de) Kennyn 1324 (1334): see Llinos Beverley Smith, ‘The Arundel Charters to the Lordship of Chirk in the Fourteenth Century’: BBCS 23, ii, p.16. The northern boundary of the Forest of Bodlith is specified as de Curnmoilfre usque rivulum de Kennyn que quidam acqua ducit usque ad Riedles [Rhydlios], et de illo loco usque ad Nanthavodik’ [Nant Hafodig] et de illo loco usque ad Bolhedompgew [Bwlchydomge] et de illo loco usque ad Carycummuerth; Nankenyn 1277-8TNA JUST 1/1147, m.2d., (villa) Nankennyn 1278TNA JUST 1/1147, m.11.; Nankenin, Nankenny 1279 TNA JUST 1/1147, m.27 (WAR, p.305); (messuage called) Nant keny’n (and lands in ts. of Kerriog and Rhywlas in Kynlleth yr Iarll)1580 NLW CHIRK/F/1090. It is possible that Kennyn also survives in the n. of a tributary of Ysgwennant recorded in a ho.n. as Bach-gynan 1837 OS 1:10,560 and Fâch Gynan 1900 and Fachgynan 1953 OS 1:10,560

There is no evidence to support the suggestion that Sgwennant derives from Is-gwen-nant as suggested in Cymru 51: 243.

egin may be the leading element in the rare pers.ns. Eginyn and Eginir:Cane, pp.11, 24, in the particular sense ‘offspring’.

David Stephenson (MP 230 and n.70) argues that what unites the instances of swyddin historical records was that ‘they seem to have represented areas dependent on early (Anglo-Norman) castles. This was probably the case with Y Tair Swydd, and certainly so with Swydd Eginlle, as with the swyddi of Maelienydd’. One of the three swyddi of Maelienydd, viz. Swydd Rhiwlallt, has no identifiable castle, however, and see also Swydd Llannerch-hudol. Swydd Eginlle was the territorial area of the office (officium) of the ringildand need not have been an area dependent on a castle.
