Spurgeon suggests Castell Coch in the Brut anno 1233 refers to Castlewright/Bishopsmoat but David Stephenson prefers to identify it with Castel(l) Hithoet in AC, p.79, and Hychoet in Cronica de Wallia, BBCS XII (1946), pp. 27-44. His identification of Hithoet/Hychoet with Castell Bryn Amlwg alias Castle Cefn Fron is cautious but he suggests these forms may stand for uwch coed (‘above the wood’). This is possible but it is difficult to reconcile Hithoet/Hychoet with Coch and he consequently treats them as different elements. He admits (p.122, n.17), however, that it is ‘somewhat unusual – though not unique – for a castle of some substance to be known by as many different names as are being proposed here: Ruthin, Castell Coch, Castell Hychoet …, Castell Bryn Amlwg and in fairly recent times, Castle Cefn Fron …’ I think we can be confident that Castell Bryn Amlwg is Ruthin since it lies in Ruthin Rhiwgantin, Shropshire, but the identification with Castell Coch and Castell Hithoet/Hychoet is very doubtful.

Thomas Price in a letter to a Mr Pugh c.1692-3, among the correspondence of Edward Lhuyd, was of the opinion that Corndon is onely a corruption of the Brittish name Carnattinn, or rather Carneddon, which signifies heaps of stones, but on what occasion erected, I cannot certainely tell BodlA MS 1829, f.170.There is, however, no trace of carnedd in any other historic evidence and no mention of carneddon as a pl. form in GPC.

The historic evidence for Cornorion is late but we can rule out any semantic association with Cororion (Llandygái), co. Caernarfon, found in earlier sources as Creweryon and Kreuwyryon and similar forms. This is generally thought to be a compound containing crau2, craw2 ‘sty, hovel, pigsty’: see HEALl 126-7 and ELlSG 93.
