He has a ref. to two dairy hos. in Llanerfyl as Lyestith-yn y Dole gwinnion 1590 and speculates that ‘white meadow’ may allude to the production of milk. That seems unlikely in the case of Nant y Dolau Gwynion since it is just 2km from a very small stream Nant Cerig-gwynion (a tributary of Tanat).

‘a new town’: the report of Professor Arthur Beacham to the Welsh Office in 1964 on depopulation in Mid Wales prompted commission to consultants Economic Associates to draw up proposals for a new town under the New Towns Act 1965. Their proposals for a new town centred on Caersws extending southwards to Llanidloes and eastwards to Drenewydd/Newtown met with widespread opposition partly in fear of ‘Birmingham overspill’. This plan was modified in 1968 when the Newtown New Town Development Corporation was set up, its name changing soon afterwards to Mid Wales Development: David Pugh, ‘Newtown historical notes’ (The Civic Trust for Wales) <studylib.net/doc/7901230/newtown—historical-notes>
The historic form Newentone c.1250 cited by Melville Richards (NTC 143) must be disregarded. The context suggests that this was in the vicinity of Montgomery and Chirbury and may well be simply a scribal error for some historic form of Winnington, Shropshire.
