a large part of Shropshire: Charles-Edwards in WB, p.18, regards Powys as the uplands of the area once occuped by the British tribe the Cornovii, but the evidence for this period is, as he says, obscure.
Powys Fadog: writ to the bailiff of Roger de Mortimer of Powys Maddok 1294 CCR 1288-96, p.395, refers to that part of Powys transferred to the new lordship of Chirkland alias Swydd y Waun in 1282; mandate to William de Pole and Griffith Waghan to cause the Welsh of the land of Powys Griffyuth and Powys Madok 1297 CPR 1288-1292, p.294. David Stephenson in MP, p.305, argues that Powys Madok in this instance is unlikely to refer to Powys Fadog alias northern Powys as John de Warenne, lord of Bromfield and Iâl, received a like mandate. Bromfield and Iâl were previously the main possessions of Gruffudd ap Madog.
