The bridge is also recorded in 1604 when it is described as located between Park Gwayre and Doll y Bont MontC 26, p.29
It is possible that the bones derive from a battle at Rhyd-y-groes in 1039 in which Gruffudd ap Llywelyn defeated the English though this has also been identified with a location near Aberriw/Berriew (MontC 5: 100-1).
*Bōta which is better recorded: see Briggs Index, p.66, and p.74, for Butta; Botynton is brigge (bisede the poole)in 1478 Worcestre, p.66 (‘to Buttington Bridge by the pool’ Harvey, p.67); other secondary sources: note PPEW 69, n.14; WB, pp. 507-8, and in particular the comments in MontC 38, pp.192-6; Buttingtune on Sæfyrne: ASC (BL Tiberius A. For the background to the Northmen’s campaign see Alfred P. Smyth, King Alfred the Great (Oxford 1995), pp. 126-7. Smyth does not indicate which location he preferred. We know that the English army consisted of men from Wessex (’from every borough east of the Parret, and both east and north of Selwood’) and from Mercia (‘from north of the Thames and west of Severn’) which favours Buttington Tump. Tal-y-bont/Buttington seems an unlikely place to winter if they were intent on escaping in the following spring. Large armies depended on sea vessels or large rivers for rapid movement and Hafren/Severn was suitable for large boats only as far as Shrewsbury and smaller boats as far as Cei’r Tralllwng/Pool Quay One might also have expected greater Welsh involvement if there was any threat to Powys and north Wales in general. After the battle, some of the survivors attempted to reach Essex; that does not favour Tal-y-bont/Buttington.
A large number of corpses: Monmouthshire Merlin 21 Oct 1837 and the North Wales Chronicle 24 Oct 1837: the bodies were found when workmen were digging the foundations for a school-house:’immense quantities of human skulls huddled together in holes with other human bones … to the amount of several cart-loads’. More than 300 skulls were counted and were displayed in the church. According to W. Boyd Dawkins, ‘On some Human Bones found at Buttington’, in MontC 6 (1873), pp.141-5, and the newspaper Shropshire Chronicle, there were three pits. One contained 100 skulls arranged to face east and covered with a single range of thigh and leg bones. In the two others pits were about 100 skulls intermixed with other bones. The skulls showed that the men were in ‘the full vigour of manhood’ and some had fractures suggesting violent death. See also Charles W. Dymond, ‘On the identification of the Site of “Buttingtune,” of the Saxon Chronicle, Anno 894’, in MontC 31 (1900), pp. 337-46, who agrees with the identification. The dating of the bones is discussed by David Horovitz in Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians; the Battle of Tettenhall 910 A.D.; and other West Mercian Studies (2017), p.30, n.107

Trehafren
Newtown New Town Development Corporation was established in 1968, later changing its name firstly to Mid Wales Development and secondly to the Development Board for Rural Wales. The Board proposed two large housing estates on the north side of Llanidloes Road and another south of the railway. The first became Trehafren and the second Treowen: David Pugh, ‘Newtown historical notes’ (The Civic Trust for Wales) <studylib.net/doc/7901230/newtown—historical-notes>

Tylwch 1870: Tylwch, i’r Dulas 1870 Haul 14, no.163, p.205; an alternative n. for Dulas: as indicated in
(1) CReg II, p.493 (letter of Lewis Morris ?1757): ‘The river Gwenvron … runs into another called Tylwch, (as pronounced), perhaps Dulwch.’ This is contradicted in part in:
(2) a description of the boundaries of Cefnyraelwyd in 1281: Teleuh sursum reddit usque Reydgorn ubi Escop’ cadit in Teleuh, et sic per Escop usque Aberwenbran AWR, no.424, p.614 and
(3) by a description of part of Arwystli and part of Gwerthrynion claimed by Roger Mortimer in 1280. Pergenauc probably referred to the unnamed stream which meets Gwy/Wye at SN 916761 near Tyncoed. Tellouch must refer to that stretch of Dulas down to its junction with Nant Rhydclwydiau at Rhyd Meheryn (SN 988781). Redgern must have been very close to this point as it is otherwise mentioned as a place Y Rhyd Gernne between Ffridd Esgair-maen (ffreythe Esker y Mayne) and y Rhewe 1561 MontC 51, p.28. Esgair-maen is the area on the north side of Nant Rhydyclwydiau. From Redgern the boundary runs to Blaengwrach which must have been at or very close to the ho. Grach (SO 012797) on the co. boundary. Gwrach must have been a tributary of or possibly a former name of the stream Nant Cydros which meets Dulas at SN 982795) above the ht. Tylwch.
Taken collectively the evidence suggests that Afon Dulas bore the alternative n. Tylwch from the vicinity of Tylwch ht. to Reydgorn/Redgern/Y Rhyd Gernne. Here the sources differ. TNA JUST 1/1147, m.20. (WAR p.281) in 1280 applies Tellouch to the whole of Dulas from this point up to the county boundary (SN 933772). CReg II broadly agrees with this and Gwenvron survives as the n. of its main tributary Nant Gwynfron 1888 OS 1:10,560 in co. Montgomery west of the boundary with co. Radnor. AWR by contrast describes modern Dulas as Escop as far as Aberwenbran. This is uncorroborated and Aberwenbran cannot be positively located unless it refers to a point on the modern Dulas near Gwenfron (SN 949769) or the county boundary.
Glyntollegh 1360-2 TNA SC.6/1263/3; Glemtologh 1371-2 ~ /1209/12; (forest) Glyntoloth 1425 CIPM XXII, no.510 (Glyntologh Forest 1425-6 ~ /1209/17); Tylwch appears in two boundary descriptions dating to 1200 discussed in TRad 40, p.68, and in 1281 in BL Harley 1240, ff. 57-58v.
